Although the sandwiches and burgers are pretty decent - their soups are terrible.  I've been here several times for soup, being the only soup place close to work, and it tastes like something out of a can.  New England Clam Chowder is generic.  Chili is more like tomato broth with some beans and broccoli in it - nothing like chili, in fact, I don't even think it had chilies in it.

I should start this review saying that I have only been here once for their Saturday brunch.

I found this place while searching for somewhere with in walking distance of CalTrain, where I could meet a model to discuss a photoshoot.  I found their menu online and couldn't resist the vanilla bean french toast and $3 mimosas.  The french toast was good, but honestly, left a little to be desired.  My husband had a "Bennie" ... eggs Benedict ... which was really good!  Now I can't have either of those since I found out that I am gluten intolerant, but I can still have their scrambles, which I will try.  Plus they had great coffee.

The ambieance was nice.  We were the first ones there, so there was no one else in the place but us for a while.  It was quite clean and bright, with comfy wooden booths.  I found their prices to be pretty reasonable.  I would definitely go back again if I were in the area.

My boss has a bit of a vendetta against the Brickhouse, or as she likes to put it "the ICK-house." So despite its close proximity to our office, she goes out of the way to have us meet with outside folks elsewhere. Apparently she had a bad experience some time ago. I have no such issues with the Brickhouse--every time I've gone the staff have always been pleasant and they really know how to handle the crowds efficiently. Still, with my boss' strong feelings, every time I go there I kinda feel like the teenager sneaking out behind their parents back--being very vague about where I went to lunch.

Food-wise, they serve sandwiches and burgers on fresh tasty bread. I've enjoyed the dishes I've had there, even if they are a little on the pricey side. On my most recent visit, my dining companion would caution against the vegetarian sandwich--stick with the veggie burger! They take plastic which is always a plus. Drink-wise, I enjoyed the cabernet on one occasion, but I would caution against the sodas--on more than one occasion my diet coke has tasted off--adjust the machines!

All in all, the Brickhouse is a reliable, convenient standby in the 'hood and a nice ambiance that will bring me back, even if it's covertly.

M E H. The word was made for this place. First of all, holy hotcakes Batman, this place is expensive. Everything is a few dollars more than it should be. Second, the service sucks. For one thing, if you're getting a $13 cheeseburger, you shouldn't have to stand in line to order it. Oh, and it shows up lukewarm (gobble those fries down, cause they're going to be nasty in 5 minutes).

I ate lunch at Brickhouse today and had a reasonably good burger (though overpriced and underwarm), which is why they don't get one star. This is because of several visits where I had such poor service that for a period of two years I boycotted the place.

One visit (among many) sticks out in my mind: Me and a work pal finish some code in the evening and decide to head out for a bite. We go to Brickhouse. We are nearly alone in the restaurant. The waitress announces the special is fish and chips. My pal wants it, but asks the waitress to be sure they have sufficient fish and chips. Three minutes later she returns and assures us the fish and chips are good to go. He orders his F&C, I get a burger. Remember, we are essentially alone (there were a couple of people quaffing beers at the bar).

Fully 45 minutes later (not kidding - we ordered at a quarter after so it was easy to see how long things took) my burger shows up, cold as a day old dead pigeon. The waitress sets down my plate, turns to my companion, and announces "We're out of fish & chips. What can I get you?" I cannot imagine more epic fail from any service perspective, with the possible exception of physically assaulting a patron. I mean, how craptastic can you get? How did the fish and chips suddenly dry up? Nobody is eating but the two of us - did the dishwasher nab the last of it?

So, the food at Brickhouse is okay if someone else is paying, but the service sucks. And not in a good way. If someone demands that I return I will, but I'll likely order something not cooked and get it to go: at least then I know I'll get it inside of 10 minutes and hey - if it's cold, no problem. Nice space though.

Walking around SOMA with time on my side, I discovered the Brickhouse Cafe which serves a very good breakfast.  When I saw the menu from outside, I stepped in wanting more than a breakfast sandwich or bagel w/ cream cheese.

I had to try their Vanilla Bean French Toast.  I ordered it with fresh fruit on top.  To my surprise and delight, it was delicious.  The vanilla bean in their batter makes for an even sweeter French Toast.  My fruit consisted of strawberry, watermelon, cantaloupe, pear and apple.  Life is but a dream!  With this I ordered a side of bacon which was a thicker slice and leaner than served at other places.

They have a very good selection of breakfast items and coffee drinks.  All of which I will try next time.  With many breakfast options, it gets 5 stars!

Got the Big Ass Burger and a side of chipotle aioli.  It comes with fries.  $10+ tax and tip was very reasonable for decent lunch in SOMA.  Loved my burger but maybe it was a bit too much bread (a ciabbatta roll ...)

I lucked out by coming JUST BEFORE the lunch rush and got through the order line and didn't wait very long for my burger to arrive.

This is 2 blocks from work so I WILL be back!

Lines are an odd source of anger for me.

Not waiting in them, that part I am ok with, I am quite patient.

It's the other two scenarios that irritate the bejesus out of me.

Scenario 1 - You are standing at let's say, Peet's coffee waiting for your beverage.  You are a good 35 feet from the register, obviously not in line to place an order.  Someone walks behind you and stands thinking that's the line to place an order.

Here is where I like to wait a while to really make them feel like a dipshit.  I know, it's mean, but I can't help it.  About 30-45 seconds go by when they look at me and ask "are you in line here?"

I give the obligatory smart ass smirky "no."

Scenario 2 - Waiting in line at the Brickhouse.  The "please seat yourself" sign is up.  A line has formed because obviously, there aren't any seats available.  Some morons blast by, read the sign, look at the people waiting, walk through the restaurant, and then, come to the remarkable conclusion that indeed, the people standing around in an orderly fashion are in fact, waiting for a table.

I then pull the "nice walk?" smart ass comment.

I dunno, I am really a nice guy, it's just with these lines and such, I get testy.

Anywhooo....

Big ass burger with bacon and avocado cures any hangovers.

The combination Sunday brunch & Giants pre-game made service complete crap but like I have stated in the past, I don't care about service.

The burger was ok, the bloody mary was marginal.

3 stars.

Coagulation.

Definitely a very friendly and open place - more of a European pub style feel to it.  Service was a bit slow but I think that was part of the charm.

I got the wagyu burger and it was more or less an average burger (21st Amendment's better).  Good flavor but not the rich, full flavor that you get in a steak.  Of course, that was probably my error because I suspect a burger patty may lose quite a bit of the tenderness due to processing.

It's been a few months since I've been to Brickhouse but the memories of the sweet taste of wagyu beef burger still linger on my tongue. Great place to hang out with friends after a long day at work. If you have a group of 4, ask the server to not seat you in the booth coz it is really tight, especially for guys. The SOMA burger is the best. Perfectly grilled beef still dripping juice with aroma of mushroom, in between perfectly warmed, lightly grilled bread. Whether it's wagyu beef or not, it is definitely a GOOD burger. Parking is not hard at all and it in the safer section of the neighborhood.

I've worked down the street from Brickhouse for almost a year, and go at least once a week. Definitely the best burgers in the area. Sandwiches are also great.

Food is a little on the expensive side. It's usually busy but there is always room upstairs. I love the vibe.

I've never had any problem with the service, it's not the kind of place where they seat you and bring out refills.

I guess the strong points are the vintage charm and good food. I love this place

When I worked for Yahoo we had an open tab here for coffee so I used to go often since "just around the corner" and "free" are serious motivators for me.

My Yahoo days are over, but I still stroll into Brickhouse every now and then for the cozy cafe ambiance which includes a *full* bar, happy hour specials and $3.00 mimosas on the weekends.  Alcoholic tendencies aside, they make a killer burger and great homemade soups, and my favorite - the French dip, is deeelish!

The service can be a bit on the slow side during the lunch hour, but it's not because anyone is lagging, so in my book that makes it tolerable.

The Brickhouse is the definition of cute.  We came in early on a Friday to find tables open and waiting for us (the server blamed the Olympics for this rare event.)  There was live jazz playing.  Normally I'm not a fan of live music at dinner as it can be impossible to hear over.  This was at an acceptable level and was really quite delightful.  High compliment from someone who wished the live music would vanish when I first saw it.

The tables are cute with fresh flowers on them, there is a tree in the middle of the bar area, plenty of natural light, and I think it does perfect as a casual date place.  While we were there, the people next to us got engaged.  I think they were pushing the level of cute there.

The service sucks.  It is slow, they forget things, and my food came about two minutes after my salad did.  If you hate bad service, do not go to the brickhouse.  You'll be pissed.  If you don't care about how long dinner takes, or if you have to remind them to bring you your wine, then it is a really awesome place.

So... a couple weeks ago my friends and I went here for brunch. Good food, lousy service.... we got completely forgotten on several occasions, and they forgot to give me my toast until we were all done eating.... and I had to remind them! I'm not planning a return trip.

Call ahead of time during the lunch rush to avoid getting stuck in line for 10, 15 minutes.  Friendly staff.  The pulled-pork sandwich is knee-jerkingly good (but it's only served once a week on Thursdays, I think)!

This place is really cool. Note that I've only been for lunch, though. The staff is always nice, the food is good and there's this really special vibe I get from it. The combination of a hip staff and friendly patrons all around is what makes it a favorite experience for me

Yellow Tail Sandwich and a beer is my weekly treat! My friends say the burgers are great too.

I really like brickhouse.  I think the food they make here is great for the price you pay and they also have beer selections if you want to help drown some sorrows for the first half of the work day.  I tried their half soup and sandwich entree.  The tomato bisque was cooked great and the grilled cheese was not overwhelming in cheese, perfect balance with the herb bread (not sure what it was again).  It gets crowded here so expect a lil wait but its worth it in my opinion to stop by for lunch if you work in the area.

The burgers suck now, sorry.

I went to Brickhouse about a year or so ago when some friends and I went to the SOMA for lunch. The burgers were a bit pricey, but the beef was "wagyu" and the servings were good. The burger itself was delicious and moist when I ordered it medium. The service, from what I can remember, was ok.

We went again a couple months later and the burgers were still pretty good. The service was pretty sucky and it wasn't during a rush or anything. The burgers took forever but we didn't really mind at the time because the burgers were still good.

Went there a little while ago and it's changed for the worse. The burgers are not "wagyu" anymore but "Grass-fed", though the wagyu/kobe burger is still on the menu for 3-4 dollars more than it was when it was regularly that type of meat. My friends and I both ordered our burgers medium but they came so well-done that they were dry and tasteless.  Also, it looked like the patty was one of those frozen ones you get at the grocery store, not irregular shaped like some patties made of fresh meat are (and I love my burgers). The bun was a wheat bun and a different one from before, but the entire burger was SO dry that the patty crumbled apart and I had to force myself to eat it. I wouldn't have forced myself if the burger cost less than 10$. But yeah, 10$ for a regular, no special toppings or cheese, burger. Robbery.

Service this time wasn't anything remarkable but the credit machine was broken for a while that day. My friends went here a bit more frequently and said there was a couple of people who were asshole-y to them but I haven't had that problem.

I've only tried the bar food a couple times and it was ok. The onion rings were really good as well as the pesto sauce that came with them. But skip the burgers and go somewhere else.

This is a great little neighborhood restaurant that does many things very well:  morning coffee, lunch, dinner, happy hour and prices.

I'm not a coffee drinker but I know several that stop here for their morning joe every day.

I'm definitely an alcohol drinker and can attest to their awesome bar and small but decent wine selection.

Brick House is a great lunch spot but don't try getting in here right at noon because the line goes out the door.  (1pm seems to be the right time.)

Personally, I like dinner at the Brick House, best.  It's a great choice for a good solid meal when I'm not in the mood for making a big production out of dinner and I'm not feeling the taqueria thing either.  The food ranges from OK to great and two of us can eat for about $30 including glasses of wine.

Was at the furniture store across the street on a quiet Saturday afternoon and figured to go have some drinks at this well reviewed establishment.  We were seated promptly by the busboy and given menus.

Our waitress came by and we ordered a few beers and told her we didn' want food. She asked if we want to keep the menus which we said would be fine.  Then she just goes over to the register area for about 5 minutes doing something else.

A guy who works there  comes over and ask' us if he can get us something so I tell him we already ordered, and we just want our drinks.

So he goes over to the register and just standing there for another 5 minutes doing something.

Oh well!  We just get up and walk out.  If you can't get a customer a beer in 10 minutes, then screw you.  This is the worst service I have ever had and would give them 0 stars, but this place needs to get there stuff together because it really sucks when you can't get a drink!

Super laid-back, comfortable spot - perfect for grabbing lunch or a quick HH beer. They have pints of PBR for $2! My favorite thing for lunch is the soup + sandwich combo - grilled cheese (two types) with tomato and pesto on foccacia bread, with your choice of soup. My personal fav is the tomato basil. Brickhouse has extremely tasty food at good prices (considering the quality of the food). Lunch is definitely a crazy time, and it'll take some time to get your food (regardless if you're doing take-out or eating in). If you want a quick lunch, you should either come between 11:30-12 or after 1.

If you want a real burger in the E. SOMA, this is the place to go. There are other good things to eat here, like the delicious Tomato Bisque Soup, but this is the place to ask that age old question , 'Where's the Beef?'.

Service here is usually good, but they have a loser or two who like to be smart azzes around there sometimes. Brickhouse, if you read this, please keep your young ones in check to be respectful of their customers.

This is a great dinner spot for reasonably-priced grub.

Good place for lunch as well, but it can get a little crazy (the line). Proceed with caution.

Ok... so i do very few 5 star reviews.... ok you're right... i may do more than normal... but this one really deserves it. Ok, first off... I CAN GET MY OWN WATER... that's an instant 3 stars... I like getting water myself because I drink A LOT of water... like a lot a lot. Anywho... I have been 3 times and have always had a great experience.

Their burgers are all I have ever ordered and so far they are great. The first time I had a regular burger with cheese... so TASTY... and it's hard to impress me with a plain burger, but by golly... they did it. Next visit I had the burger with BBQ sauce and Blue Cheese (forgot the name) and it made me pee myself... or the excess water did? It was divine. Next visit was the Soma Burger with mushrooms and avocado... and it was super tasty also. It was a bit messy... but I will have messy any day for good taste.

Truthfully, this place is soooo busy during lunch, but if anyone asks me to go... I jump at the chance. The burgers are all around $10, which is in my price range, but maybe not in anyone else's... but by god... if you live in SF.... ummm you can afford an amazing $10 lunch... if not... Texas is calling... ohh what's that... McDonalds is on the other line... let me patch you over.

A great disappointment to our evening out before Opera in the Park.

"I'm sorry, but I can't create tables out of thin air. You'll have to go somewhere else - all I can offer you is the manager's phone number.... I'm sure you can find better food elsewhere."

On the Monday prior, I made a reservation for four people for a Friday evening. Then, I called back on the day of to increase the reservation to eight people. What I - or, should I say, we - could not believe is that upon arriving at Brickhouse, both servers said they had no record of our reservation. Two calls in, two confirmations of our reservation, then... nothing.

On top of this, the second server - a colorfully attired woman with a sharp demeanor - was quite rude to us. There was zero empathy for the restaurant's mistake, and little concern for us ever returning to actually try the food. See quote above.

I scrambled to find another place to eat for eight on a warm Friday evening, and made the coordinating calls to get everyone there. After a bit of a wait, we managed to get a table at nearby 21st Amendment and arrived in time for the start of the opera at AT&T Park.

Shame on you, Brickhouse Cafe.

p.s. I am pleased to see that this particular review single-handedly dropped the average from four stars to three-and-a-half. Slainte!

Brickhouse is a good neighborhood staple (in a neighborhood that really needs more reasonably-priced basics like this.) They are great for breakfast or a burger. And Brickhouse can sometimes surprise you with something a little fancier. But I think they are best when they stick to basics like grilled sandwiches and fries.

My one complaint is that Brickhouse can be a little inconsistent, and they seem to run out of food sometimes. A great meal one day can easily be mediocre or unavailable the next week. I admire that they have a bar, but they don't always have someone to properly staff it.

Really, really decent food for really, really decent prices.  But their "specialty" drinks suck.  My sidecar came with a sugared rim, and they apparently use industrial grade sugar for this purpose (ordinarily used as an industrial abrasive, Grade Q sugar is not intended for actual human consumption).

My tequila peach pork chops were wonderful, and they must have used a quality tequila, because I neither hurled nor took off my shirt and danced on the table after eating them (much to the delight of everyone in the restaurant).

PLUS, I was able to get last-minute reservations for 7 people at 7:00.  Not a lot of places can handle that.  Despite fundamental compatibility problems, I continue to surround myself with people who consider "planning" to be deciding which restaurant to go to before stepping out the door.  And yet somehow it falls to me to figure out how to actually make these "plans" work by securing a table.  it's a testament to how much I like these people that I don't go on a kill-crazy rampage more often.

Also, the rigatoni & cheese is wonderful.  They insist on calling it rigatoni mac & cheese, but there's actually no mac in it at all, just rigatoni, so.......yeah......I don't get that, but whatever.  I guess when I picked up the bowl it came in and proceeded to lick it clean, that could be called macking with cheese, but, as noted above, they spell it differently, so.........I've got nothing.

I think the bad reviews on here are expecting way too much out of a great neighborhood food joint. The food here is great and there's a reason it's always packed.

The service can definitely be a little varied but I think that's more of the charm of the place than a downside.

Their burgers are huge! Their sandwiches are all very tasty.

BEST BURGER IN SF, CHICAGO, MILWAUKEE, AND TOKYO (or all the places I've ever lived)
Originally, I went to try the Wagyu (Japanese) beef which is advertised on a sign outside the place.  I wanted to see if it really was as good as the Kobe beef I had eaten in Japan... and IT WAS.
I now go for a burger there often and am rarely disappointed.  Occasionally, they cook it a little too well done, but usually it is a perfect medium-well with all the juiciness of a great burger.
I sometimes order the "half ass burger" since the regular sized burgers are huge.
I have never eaten anything other than the burger plate there.  It is that good.
Oh yeah, the place has a nice atmosphere as well.  Quaint little booths and bar
--
OK if you've read this far you'll learn that the consistency is not as good as it used to be - sometimes the burgers are a little overcooked and lose their juiciness

Low key spot if you want a quick bite to eat.  I was a bit disappointed, they had run out of their yellowtail sandwich.  Otherwise drink specials are a good deal.

Sunday brunch was a treasured moment!   Heading early to the Giants game, we stopped at Brickhouse for a quick meal.  Nice surprise to dine with the family eating healthy and delicious food, warm welcomes and smiles from the wait staff and perfect baby boomer music from the talented guitar et Mac musician!  Thanks for the beautiful setting and cozy times!

I love this place.  I've had the rib's here multiple times and each time they are phenomenal.  I especially like pork ribs over beef ribs, you can strip the bone clean.  I've never had anything here except for the ribs and a few coronas.

Yummy food at good prices.  My tuna melt and vegetarian chili was well above par.

They seem a bit disorganized, so don't expect to get in and out too quickly.

good place for happy hour after work, if you work in SOMA,  b/c it is one of the few places in SOMA that actually has a happy hour... it can tend to get pretty hot if you are in the upstairs portion, and they don't have tv to watch, but good place to meet before giants game b/c it doesn't really get crowded... a pitcher of beer at the brockhouse is cheaper than 1 beer at the giants game...

I'm a burger snob.  Really.  Super picky about my beef.  I had a burger today at Brickhouse and have only one word to say:

SO TASTY! I love the look and feel; some chili twinkle lights and the treehouse effect go a long way.

Burg's were delish (I had a veggie, of course)... the fries were soooooooo good. Had a few rounds of their specialty marg's. The place was too packed for our table of 3 to get a table, so we sat at the bar; the 'tender was super chatty and made the whole experience awesome.

Will do the dew again sometime soon.

The family and I have had issues with the change from Central Time to Pacific Time ever since we pulled into this two pony town. We eat lunch later, we go to bed later...Our routines are totally out of whack..

So, when we busted into Brickhouse on Mother's Day around 3:00, we expected to see lines of families, doting Husband's and Mother's forced to hold too large bouquets. Although, what we busted in on was nothing of the sort! As soon as we stepped into this bright and airy space we saw one other couple at a booth and a lone diner at the bar. Believing we had just came in too early, we inquired as to the close time. The waiter mentioned that they were closed for the day, but they'd love to have us sit and order..we could be their last customers!

So..you better believe that they had us at "take a seat"!

This space is warm, inviting and homey. Warm, rich earth tones wash over you and sun-light washes in from the massive sky light. *and you do know that we all look better in this kind of lighting!* Above the main dining room, you'll find a small seperate dining area complete with lounge chairs. The main room is dotted with four tops and more and a few booths lining one wall. A small bar leads into the open kitchen..which is barely masked by massive chalk boards colorfully explaining the menu and specials of the day.

And what a menu! Specialty sandwiches, massive wagyu burgers, salads, entrees and a dizzying array of Brunch items! It was a tough choice, but I opted for the Western BBQ Burger with bacon!..I know..HEART. ATTACK. After ordering our friendly server returned to inform me that they were out of bacon, but the chef did have a special bacon that he'd love to substitute. A jalepeno crusted bacon! Of course, I jumped at the opportunity to be a guinea pig! The hand formed kobe-style beef is a "whopper"..It's huge!..Mine came open faced on a foccacia-style wheat bun. Lightly dressed with a not-too-sweet BBQ sauce and a heaping helping of bacon, grilled onions and cheese atop the patty! Incredibly tasty and crispy fries accompanied this Flinstone burger! After having only one bite, I concluded that Brickhouse made a new life-long customer.

Of course, we'll be back. First, the service was spot on. Our server, especially. He was informative, helpful and engaging. I mean..yes..we were the only ones in the space for some time, but we always appreciate a smile and a welcoming attitude. Second, the space is georgeous and reminds me of what a true neighborhood tavern should be. A relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and top notch food..plus a full bar! and if you must know anything about me..It's that I do enjoy my hooch everyonce in a while*.

*= ALL THE TIME!

UPDATE:  I found out that they do have waiter service, just not during the lunch rush hour, since they have have high volumes of customers.  Makes sense to me.  5 STARS

4.5 stars

The Brickhouse has a great vibe.  You roll in this joint off of Brannan and 3rd and you realize you have found a little oasis in the midst of empty lots and warehouses.  Its packed (but not too packed) with people eating, drinking and chatting it up.  They rustic feel of this place is refreshing for a SF restaurant.  I have to take a half star off since you have to go to a counter to order.  They have sandwiches, large salads and burgers and a bar.  I ordered the turkey/avocado sandwich which comes with a side salad.  It was very good. Someone sitting at the table next to ours had a cheeseburger and fries which looked really good.

Definitely a great place to go when you are in the neighborhood.

Brickhouse Cafe is really good for pretty much every meal of the day. I used to come in for breakfast every friday for a treat. Their breakfast sandwiches and coffee are amazing! I also came here a lot for Lunch because their sandwiches and salads were great and all my co-workers loved it. The ambiance is actually quite nice given how crowded it is. And I love that they had a trivia question that you could answer each day for $1 off coffee.
I hear they also have a pretty great bar!

This place treats you like royalty.  Had an incredible turkey melt with bacon, avocado, and then they added sprouts on the toast after they melted the sandwich.  Staff couldn't be nicer.  Eat lunch here at least twice a week.  DON'T be taken back by the line to order.  They move the crowd quickly and the sandwiches, fries and soups are as good as any East Coast deli.  The owners have dressed up the place, have entertainment at night, and the bar area is filled with fun, jovial folks.  Go there before the ball game or bring a boxed dinner with you!  Deserves 4.5-5.0 stars!

Review for food only (as opposed to the bar):

Don't let the divey exterior deceive you. Brickhouse's food is high-quality, moderately-priced and large-portioned. I've been for lunch, dinner and my favorite -- brunch.

They have a very, very good brunch -- better than Butler & Chef a few blocks away and comparable to a lot of NY East Village eateries. Homemade hollandaise, fresh spinach on the florentine (not the frozen stuff), perfectly runny, poached eggs -- what more could you ask for? The sandwiches are good too, both the burgers and the fancier chicken/brie and French dip, with an au jus that really taste like it came from a roasted meat.

I'm convinced that whoever runs this place is filthy rich and is just living out his/her dream of owning his own bar and chooses to use his/her riches on purchasing the finest ingredients for the menu.

Service can be hit or miss in terms of timeliness but is always pleasant. Ambiance is nice for a bar restaurant (as in, it doesn't smell like a bar).

Lunch here is totally awesome. Hot and wild pig is my favorite but it's only there 2 days a week (tuesday, thursday). Burgers are top notch. Geneva works there and she's totally rockin'! Aaron is the man. Be sure to order from him.
